Calculator Use

Calculators that graph, scientificand four-function calculators are accepted or available for certain Praxis (r) tests. Unless it is specifically declared that a particular calculator is allowed to be used for a particular test the calculator cannot be employed.

Test takers aren't allowed to use calculators with others.

Tests That Do Not Permit Use of a Calculator

In general, unless specifically stated that a particular kind of calculator is allowed or required for a particular exam, calculators can't be used for the exam. test.

Tests That Permit the Use of a Calculator

It is possible to use a 4-function or scientific calculator for your Middle School: Content Knowledge (5146) test, even though you're not required to use it. You are required to bring your own calculator to the test center. The calculator is not available by the center for testing. A graphing calculator is not permitted for this test.

Types of CalculatorsThat Are Not Permitted

The following are not permitted during Praxis examinations:

  • Laptops or portable computers that can be carried around
  • Electronic pads for writing
  • Models with pen-input/stylus/touch-screen capability
  • Calculators can be found on any phone or watches, as well as other electronic devices
  • Models that include QWERTY and other alphabetic keyboards as part of either software or hardware
  • Models with printers
  • Models that create noise or "talk"
  • Models that require an outlet
  • Models that can access the internet or have Bluetooth (r) or wireless Bluetooth (r) capability
  • Models that have a camera with scanning capabilities, digital audio/video player recording/player capabilities

In addition, the use of hardware peripherals is prohibited.

Tests That Provide an On-screen Calculator

Calculators provided by test takers are not allowed in Praxis assessments that offer on-screen calculators.

On-Screen Scientific Calculator

This set of tests in the Praxis tests include an on-screen scientific calculator. The tests make use of an TI-30XS MultiView(tm) calculator. A tutorial is available so that you may practice using the calculator that is on your screen prior to your test day.
